Hi All
Please help me if you can. I have an assigment to carry out ' a detailed ergonomic evaluation of a workstation'. I have been given anthropometric data on british adults aged 19-65. I do not know how to apply this information my workstation and then write a 3000 word essay on critical evaluations and %ile's etc. If anyone can help me please do.

Hi Rose,
I believe you have to prepare ur report, essay & evaluation as per indivdual data provided to you.
Divide individuals in age groups ie 20-29, 30 -38, 39-45, etc.
By work station you guess should be a desk with a computer. So there are guidelines for each activity on desk ie use of computer , sewing etc.
your assessment should focus on individual comfort ie, while working on a computer height of desk to facilitate viewing inorder to reduce strain on neck, chairs to comfort u & help ur back, hand rest - key board should be placed with provision of pulling it out with a tilt..do not miss out on eye..
Age group is provided to you bcos with age our resistance reduces towards activities for eg when u r 25 u can work for 3 hours continuously but a 37 year old person cannot do so due to back problem or eye sight problem.
I suggest divide them into groups, focus on adverse effects due to working on desk. Evaluate strain on back, neck, hands - wrist, eye sight, legs...
Remember to suggest remedial action, this is most important in HSE..
Hope above discussion may help you

Yes this is all very useful information, however, my workstation in mind
is an employee standing at a bench wiring a panel and then when finished
with it setting it to one side. A chair is available if they wish to
use. I decided I would use the 95th %ile but I need to consider elbow
height, arm length and shoulder height too. Do you know how I would
apply this information to an equation Xp = M + SZ (I don't know what or
where the z information will come from.

The equation that you are looking for xp= x+ ( Z * SD)
xp - the value of the desired percentile
X - the mean 50 th percentile value
Z - is a factor for that particular percentile which can be looked up on a Z score table
SD - the standard deviation value for that percentile.
You need to use an anthropometric table of stature , as well as a anthropometric size table to determine which height you wish to calculate and which gender you are addressing. You then can calculate the desired precentile and come up with the required height.

If i choose to go with the 95th %ile, which is 1855 for stature and the mean value is 1740 and the SD is 70, how do i work this out? I have the p and z score tables now. I am really confused by this equation. Also does this mean that if i need to look at shoulder height and arm length, do i use the same equation again.
I'm sure thsi is quite simple for someone who knows this but i am lost altogether.
Please help.

Thanks for this. I have the table of stature but I do not have the z
score table.
