Derek

I remember taking working space into account as a designer, obviously if
you do not you are at risk of specifying piles of capacity or type which
cannot be installed, eg when installing CFA piles more space is required
as more than one activity is proceeding simultaneously. As a CDM-C I
would expect no less of others, who should do their own research rather
than have it provided by the CDM-C in the P-CI package, which is my
understanding of your question. Of course as a CDM-C I would raise the
issue but it is for the designer to find out the detailed requirements
for constucting his design and go on satisfy the CDM-C on the issue.
There is a chicken and egg situation here which would in any case
preclude the CDM-C from covering every possible design outcome. There
will be residual risks for construction, such as the interface with
other activities proceeding at the same time as piling. You will find
CIRIA C662 Construction Work Sector Guidance includes (sufficient)
working space in the list of key considerations in Section B6 Piling.

Regards
Geraint
