AHDB Cereals and Oilseeds (formerly HGCA) Publications

AHDB's 'Encyclopaedia of pests and natural enemies in field crops' (pdf, 123 pages) was published in 2015.  It includes a comprehensive pest identification and management guide, plus a substantial section on minimising pesticide use by encouraging and using natural enemies in an integrated pest management strategy.  (HGCA's 2008 publication 'Beneficials on farmland - identification and management guidelines' (pdf, 24 pages) provides a simple introduction to this topic.)

AHDB's 2014 information sheet 30 'Black-grass: solutions to the problem' (pdf,  4 pages) provides new information on non-chemical control methods.  This updates HGCA's 2008 information sheet 03  'Herbicide-resistant black grass: managing risk with fewer options'.

HGCA RESEARCH REVIEW 70 (March 2009): Pesticide availability for cereals and oilseeds following revision of Directive 91/414/EEC; effects of losses and new research priorities

More guidance and information on pest, weed and crop management and research can be found on the AHDB Cereals and Oilseeds website.

'Good Neighbour' Initiative (updated for 2018)

The NFU’s original ‘Good Neighbour’ leaflet was discussed at the October 2007 and February 2008 Pesticides Forum meetings. This best practice guidance for spraying near residential areas was updated in 2018.

The new guide is designed to help sprayer operators adhere to legal requirements as set out in the Code of Practice for using Plant Protection Products as well as other guidance on the Health and Safety Executive's website. It also highlights extra steps that sprayer operators can take to help build good relationships with neighbours, bystanders and the general public when carrying out spraying operations.

A double-sided information sheet has also been produced for operators to give to concerned neighbours.

NFU's 'Good Neighbour' web page:

- Guide for sprayer operators (pdf, 8 pages)

- Information sheet for neighbours (pdf, 2 pages).

Responsible Rodent Control Training Programme / UK Rodenticide Stewardship Regime

Dr Alan Buckle gave a presentation on the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) to the October 2007 Pesticides Forum meeting. In February 2008, he notified Forum members of the launch of a new responsible rodent control training programme for land-based colleges. In 2015, CRRU published their UK Code of Best Practice and also launched their UK Rodenticide Stewardship Regime.

You can find more details about the 'Wildlife Aware' training course and the latest downloads and press releases on CRRU's website 'Think Wildlife'.
